Manikganj (District)
Manikganj ( Bengali মানিকগঞ্জ ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh , which lies within the Dhaka Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Manikganj . The total area of the district is 1384 km². The district is composed of the 7 Upazilas Daulatpur, Ghior, Harirampur, Manikganj Sadar, Saturia, Shibalaya and Singair.
The Manikganj district borders Tangail in the north, Dhaka in the southeast, Faridpur in the south and the districts Pabna and Rajbari in the west. The Padma River forms the southern border . The district has 1.4 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 49.2% of the population. 95.6% of the population are Muslim , 4% are Hindus and 0.4% belong to other religions or have no religion.
The district has climatic conditions similar to Dhaka and is located in the tropical monsoon zone . The summer begins in late March and merges with the rainy season , which until September continues. The winter time is from the beginning of November to February . The highest and lowest average temperatures in 2011 were 36 degrees and 12.7 degrees.
The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . According to the 2011 census, 60.1% of the workforce work in agriculture, 29.6% in industry (mostly informal) and 10.3% in the service sector .
On April 26, 1989, Manikganj was the site of the worst tornado of the time in terms of loss of life. A total of 1,300 people were killed and 12,000 injured. The cities of Saturia and Manikganj Sadar were destroyed and about 80,000 people made homeless.
