An Upazila ( Bengali উপজেলা , " sub- district"), formerly and partly still today called Thana ( Bengali থানা ), is an administrative unit in Bangladesh below the level of the districts .

structure

The 64 districts are divided into 491 Upazilas (as of January 9, 2017). On average there are 7 to 8 Upazilas per district. A comparable administrative level in Germany is the district . Below the level of the Upazilas / Thanas there are a total of 4550 (as of: before May 2016) Union Parishads (UPs), or simply Unions (“Union Councils”, village administrative units).

designation

In today's parlance, the term Thana refers to a police station or a police district. Originally Thana was also the name of the corresponding administrative unit. From 1982 the first Upazilas were established for administrative purposes, in 1999 all remaining rural Thanas were converted into Upazilas. Only in some large cities ( Chittagong , Khulna and Rajshahi ) is the term Thana still used for certain administrative units .
