Khulna ( Bengali : খুলনা , Khulnā ) is a city in Bangladesh . It is the capital of the division of the same name and with a good 1.4 million inhabitants (as of 2014) the third largest city in the country (after Dhaka and Chittagong ).

geography

Khulna is located on the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers - both branches of the Ganges in its delta - in the south-west of the country between the capital Dhaka (distance approx. 375 km) and the Indian Kolkata . The city stretches narrowly along the Bhairab and measures almost 21 km in the north-south extension, while it measures 5.5 km at its widest point.

Strangely enough, the population fell by over 100,000 between 2001 and 2011.
