history

After independence in 1971 the four divisions Dacca (from 1983 Dhaka), Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi existed. In 1993, the Barishal Division was re-established as the 5th Division by separating from Khulna. In 1995, Sylhet was separated from Chittagong as the 6th division. In 2010 the Rangpur division was formed from parts of Rajshahi. In 2015, Maimansingh was reformed from parts of Dhaka. At the same time, the Bangladeshi government announced that two more new divisions would be formed, Faridpur from parts of Dhaka and Kumilla from parts of Chittagong.
