Rangpur ( Bengali রংপুর IAST Raṃpur ) is a city in northwestern Bangladesh on the banks of the Ghaghat River . It is the administrative headquarters of the Rangpur Division , which was founded on January 25, 2010, as well as the Rangpur District . Dhurries (cotton carpets ), bidis (cigarettes) and cigars are produced in the industrial city (2011) with a population of 300,659 . The city covers an area of ​​50.69 km² and is divided into 15 districts ( wards ).

Since 1869, the city has a city council ( municipality ). There are several universities of applied sciences in Rangpur.
