Maimansingh ( Bengali : ময়মনসিংহ জেলা , Maẏamanasiṃh jelā ; English : Mymensingh district ) is an administrative district in Bangladesh , which is located in the center of the Maimansingh division, which was newly formed in 2015 . Previously, the district was part of the Dhaka Division . The district capital is the city of Maimansingh , which was originally known as Nasirabad.

The 4363 km² large administrative unit borders in the north on the Garo Mountains of the Indian state of Meghalaya , in the south on the Gazipur district , in the east on the districts Netrokona and Kishoreganj and in the west on the administrative districts Sherpur , Jamalpur and Tangail .

The Maimansingh Administrative District was created as early as 1787. However, the original area was again divided into the current six districts Tangail, Jamalpur, Kishoreganj, Sherpur, Netrokona and Maimansingh.

The district has 5,110,272 inhabitants (2011 census).
