Maimansingh ( Bengali : ময়মনসিংহ , Maẏamanasiṃh ; English : Mymensingh ) is a city in Bangladesh , 115 km north of the capital Dhaka . It is the administrative seat of the Maimansingh District and the Maimansingh Division of the same name and is located on the bank of the former main stream of the Brahmaputra , the main course of which has been 40 kilometers further west since the sudden change in the 1780s. The city formerly known as Nasirabad has at least 300,000 residents. The city covers an area of 21.73 km² and is divided into 21 districts ( wards ).
history
Nasirabad was an important trading center of the Mughal Empire from the 16th to 18th centuries . In addition to the numerous different buildings from the Mughal period, the palace of Maimansingh (Maimansingh Rajbari), located on the Brahmaputra between 1905 and 1911, is an architectural highlight. There is now a training academy for teachers in the palace. The city has had an independent city administration ( municipality ) since 1869 .
Economy and education
Maimansingh serves as an important trading center for rice , jute , sugar cane , tobacco , mustard seeds and lentils . It is also an important location for the jute and electrical supply industries. Maimansingh has an agricultural university and several technical colleges that cooperate with the University of Dhaka .
