history

On January 26, 2015, the Bangladeshi government under Prime Minister Hasina Wajed gave its approval in principle to the establishment of a new division with headquarters in Maimansingh from the northern districts of Dhaka division . The final decision to form the new division was made on September 14, 2015 at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (NICAR, "National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms "). The districts of Tangail and Kishoreganj , which should originally also be part of the new division, remained with the Dhaka division, possibly in response to popular protests in these districts. At the same meeting, plans were also announced to create two more divisions, Faridpur and Comilla, by separating from Dhaka and Chittagong, respectively . The people of Maimansingh City reacted enthusiastically to the announcement, expecting their provincial city to be upgraded. After the separation, the Dhaka division still had 13, instead of 17 districts.
