The Moulvibazar District ( Bengali : মৌলভীবাজার জেলা , Maulabhībājār jelā ) is an administrative unit in the southeast of the Sylhet Division in Bangladesh . The seat of the district administration is Moulvibazar . The district has 1,919,062 inhabitants (2011 census).

geography

The 2799.40 km² district is located in northeast Bangladesh. It borders the districts of Sylhet in the north and Habiganj in the west as well as the Indian states of Tripura in the south and Assam in the west.

The main rivers in Moulvibazar are the Manu , Dholoi and Juri rivers . Except for a few hills, the area of ​​the district is a lowland.

Nature and wildlife

The vegetation corresponds to that of the lowland areas of Bengal and Assam with numerous evergreen trees. There are also fruit trees, palms and banana trees.

The fauna includes several species of deer, elephants and tigers. However, wild elephants and tigers have become rare because of deforestation and the rapidly increasing population (settlement pressure). There are also numerous species of birds, fish, reptiles, numerous species of snakes and amphibians.

The temperatures fluctuate between 13.6 ° C and 33.2 ° Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 3334 mm. The average humidity is around 70%. There is little rain in the months from November to March. June, July and August are the months with the most rain.

history

In the Middle Ages it was part of various small kingdoms that were partly Buddhist, partly Hindu. From the 13th century onwards, Muslim armies tried to conquer the area, which they succeeded in 1303. It belonged first to the Sultanate of Delhi , later to the Sultanate of Bengal and then to the Mughal Empire . From 1765 it belonged to British India as part of the Dhaka Division and from 1874 to Assam and the Sylhet district. The sub-district was created in 1882 under the name South Sylhet . From 1947 to 1971 the district was part of East Pakistan in the Republic of Pakistan. On March 1, 1984, the previous sub-district Moulvibazar became an independent district.

Significant places

The most populous place within the district is the district capital Moulvibazar . Other towns (Town) are Barlekha , Kamalganj , Kulaura and Srimangal (Sreemangal). But with Juri and Rajnagar there are two other places without city rights with more than 10,000 inhabitants. The urban population makes up only 10.84 percent of the total population. Although Moulvibazar was created under the name South Sylhet in 1882 as an administrative sub-unit of the Sylhet District (today Sylhet Division), it was not until 1984 that it received the status of an independent national administrative district. Moulvibazar is divided into seven Upazilas : Barlekha, Juri, Kamalganj, Kulaura, Moulvibazar Sadar, Rajnagar and Srimangal. Within this administrative subdivision there are five self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 67 Union Parishads (village councils) and 2015 villages.

In total there are (2011) 1,436,133 people who are older than 10 years. Of these, 445,888 people are in school, 24,932 people looking for work and 448,047 people work in a household. 517,266 people are in paid employment. 256,166 (= 49.5 percent) of these people work in agriculture and fishing, 61,637 in industry and 199,463 in services.

The main agricultural products are rice , tea , wheat , legumes , potatoes , oil seeds and spices. The most common types of fruit are mangoes , jackfruit , bananas, pineapples, litchis , coconuts and blackberries. The main export products are rice, tea, betel nuts and bamboo.
