Madaripur ( Bengali : মাদারিপুর ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh , which is within the Dhaka Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Madaripur . The total area of ​​the district is 1144 km². The district is composed of the 4 Upazilas Kalkini, Madaripur Sadar, Rajoir and Shibchar.

The Madaripur district borders on Faridpur and Munsiganj in the north, Barishal in the south, Shariatpur in the east and Gopalganj in the west. The northern border is formed by the Padma River . The district has 1.2 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 48% of the population. 91.1% of the population are Muslim and 8.8% are Hindus .

The economy of Madaripur is predominantly agricultural. Out of the total of around 244,000 resident farms in the district, 57.68% are farms. Mainly rice , wheat , jute , vegetables , spices and legumes are produced .

The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 35.8 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 12.6 degrees. The annual rainfall is 2105 mm and the humidity is high.

Madaripur was founded in 1854 as a subdivision of the Bakerganj district. In 1873 it was separated from Bakerganj and incorporated into the Faridpur district. Madaripur was converted into a district in 1984. The Madaripur district was named after the Sufi saint Sayed Badiuddin Ahmed Zinda Shah Madar (died 1434 AD).
