Patuakhali (District)

Patuakhali ( Bengali : পটুয়াখালী জেলা , Paṭuẏākhālī jelā ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh , which is part of the Barishal Division , the superordinate administrative unit. It consists of a whole series of so-called chars , i.e. islands that often change their position but also their existence due to changed rivers and floods.

The 3,204.58 km² district borders on the Barishal district in the north, Bhola in the east, the Bay of Bengal in the south and the Barguna district in the west .

The main rivers are the Andharmanik , Agunmukha , Payra , Lohalia , Patuakhali and Tentulia .

The Patuakhali district, which has existed since 1969, is administratively divided into the eight Upazilas Bauphal, Dashmina, Galachipa, Kalapara, Mirzaganj, Patukhali Sadar, Dumki and Rangabali. Within this administrative subdivision there are 67 Union Parishads (village councils), three city councils ( municipalities ) and 882 villages.

The district has 1,535,854 inhabitants (2011 census). The district capital is Patuakhali, with a population of around 65,000 .
