Jhalokathi ( Bengali : ঝালকাঠি ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh , which is within the Barishal Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Jhalokathi . The total area of ​​the district is 707 km². The district is composed of the 4 Upazilas Jhalakati Sadar, Kanthalia, Nalchiti and Rajapur. Jhalokati was founded in 1972 as a subdivision of the Barishal District and was upgraded to an independent district on February 1, 1984.

It is widely believed that the current area of ​​the district once consisted of dense forest and was later settled by fishermen. Because of the navigation possibilities, the area attracted Europeans from the 17th century . The British East India Company , the Dutch and the French established trading centers here, making the area an important trading center.

The Jhalokati District is bordered by the Barishal District to the north and east, Barguna to the south and Pirojpur to the west . The district has 682,669 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 66.7% of the population. 92.1% of the population are Muslim and 7.8% are Hindus .

The climate is tropical and humid. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 33.3 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 12.1 degrees. The annual rainfall is 2506 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . According to the 2011 census, 47.7% of the workforce work in agriculture, 41.6% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 10.7% in industry .
