The Jessore District ( Bengali : যশোর জেলা , Yaśor jelā , Jashor Jela ) is an administrative unit in the west of the Khulna Division in Bangladesh . Its capital is Jessore . The district has 2,764,547 inhabitants (2011 census).

The 2578.20 km² administrative unit borders the districts of Jhenaidaha and Magura in the north, the districts Narail and Khulna in the east, Satkhira and Khulna in the south and the Indian state of West Bengal in the west .

The Jessore district, founded in 1781, is divided into eight Upazilas : Abhaynagar, Bagherpara, Chaugachha, Jhikargachha, Keshabpur, Jessore Sadar, Manirampur and Sharsha.

Within this administrative division there are four self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 92 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1,434 villages.

Jessore was the first independent district in Bangladesh. On December 6, 1971, the residents of the district fought for their independence from Pakistan .
