Tangail (Bengali: টাঙ্গাইল) is a district in the Dhaka Division in Bangladesh. It used to be a Mohkuma (মহকুমা) in Maimansingh District . In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Tangail . The total area of ​​the district is 3414 km². The district consists of 12 Upazilas .

Tangail district is surrounded by several other districts, Jamalpur in the north, Dhaka and Manikganj in the south, Maimansingh and Gazipur in the east, and Sirajganj in the west. The district has 3,605,083 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 46.8% of the population. 94.5% of the population are Muslim and 5.4% are Hindus .

The climate is tropical and warm all year round. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 38.3 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 10.1 degrees. The annual rainfall is 1830 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . According to the 2011 census, 55.3% of the workforce work in agriculture, 32.9% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 11.8% in industry .
