Monumento Virgen de La Paz

The Peace Monument (also known as Virgen de la Paz - Virgin of Peace ) is a colossal concrete memorial sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which was erected 11 km southwest of the city of Trujillo in Venezuela . The statue is 46.72 meters high, 16 meters wide, 18 meters deep at the base and has a concrete weight of about 1200 tons. It is the tallest statue in Latin America and also taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York in USA. The work is by the sculptor Manuel de la Fuente (* Cádiz, Spain 1932; † Mérida, Venezuela 2010).

The monument is also located at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level in the so-called Peña de la Virgen - there the Virgin is said to have appeared in 1570. The enclave of mountains and tropical vegetation offers a spectacular panoramic view of the region. The monument was inaugurated on December 21, 1983 by the then President of Venezuela Luís Herrera Campíns . It consists of five viewpoints from which, on a clear day, you can see almost the entire state of Trujillo, part of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida and the south coast of Lake Maracaibo .
