Thakurgaon ( Bengali : ঠাকুরগাঁও) is a district in the Rangpur Division of Bangladesh . In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Thakurgaon . The total area of ​​the district is 1781.74 km². The district is composed of 5 Upazilas .

Location and demographics

Thakurgaon is bounded by Panchagarh to the north and Dinajpur to the east. It borders on West Bengal ( India ) to the south and west . The district has 1,390,042 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 48.7% of the population. 76.7% of the population are Muslims , 22.3% are Hindus and 1.0% are Christians , Buddhists or others.

The climate is tropical and warm all year round. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 33.5 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 10.5 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall is 2536 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.

economy

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . Thakurgaon produces many agricultural products such as rice, wheat, sugar cane, seasonal vegetables and fruits. However, the distance of the region from the capital makes it difficult to bring local products to the national market, as the area has hardly been developed with modern infrastructure. According to the 2011 census, 69.8% of the workforce work in agriculture, 26.7% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 3.5% in industry .
