Narayanganj ( Bengali : নারায়ণগঞ্জ ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh , which is within the Dhaka Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Narayanganj .

Narayanganj district borders Gazipur and Narsingdi to the north, Brahmanbaria and Kumilla to the east, Munsiganj to the south, and Dhaka to the west. It lies on the banks of the Meghna and Sheetolokkha rivers . The district has 5 Upazilas , 6 parishes, 54 wards, 282 mahallahs (neighborhoods) , 41 Union Council and 1,204 villages. The district has an area of ​​683 km² and about 2.9 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 57% of the population.

Narayanganj is one of the oldest industrial areas in Bangladesh. It is also a center for business and commerce, particularly for the trade and processing of jute and the country's textile sector. Because of the many jute mills it is known as the " Dundee of Bangladesh". In addition to the textile industry, agriculture employs most of the workers.

The current district was created in 1984 from parts of Dhaka . The city of Narayanganj was founded in 1876 and had a population of over a million people in 2011.

In Narayanganj are the ruins of the ancient city of Sonargaon . It was the capital of Bengal during the reign of Isha Khan .
