Narayanganj ( Bengali নারায়ণগঞ্জ) is a metropolis in Bangladesh south of the capital Dhaka . It is the seat of the Narayanganj District in the Dhaka Division .
location
The city belongs to the densely populated area around Dhaka in the center of Bangladesh. Narayanganj is located directly on the Shitalakshya River , which flows into the Meghna shortly afterwards . On the opposite side of the river east of Narayanganj is the smaller town of Bandar , to the west is Fatulla and to the north is the city of Godenail .
history
The city is named after the Hindu religious leader Bicon Lal Pandey, who was also known as Benur Thakur or Lakhsmi Narayan Thakur. After the Battle of Plassey , he leased the area of the city from the British East India Company in 1766 . The first post office was established in 1866 . From 1877 the telegraph service Dhaka-Narayanganj was started. The Bank of Bengal introduced the first telephone service in 1882 . The municipality of Narayanganj was created on September 8, 1876th In 1885, through support from Harakanta Banerjee, the community financed the city's first hospital with Victoria Hospital .
The Narayanganj City Corporation was founded on May 5, 2011 and united the three former parishes of Narayanganj, Siddhirganj and Kadam Rasul .

The population of around 1.5 million people is steadily increasing. Before 2000, Narayanganj had less than a million inhabitants.
religion
The majority of the population belongs to Sunni Islam . There are many mosques and some Hindu temples in the city .
education
Narayanganj has three colleges : Govt founded in 1937 . Tolaram University College , the Narayanganj Govt. Mohila College and Narayanganj University College .
Economy and Transport
The city is an important traffic and industrial location with a large port on Shitalakshya. There is also a rail link for the port in Narayanganj and a ferry terminal . The jute trade and the processing of these plants are of particular industrial importance. Due to the presence of many jute mills, Narayanganj was also known as the " Dundee of Bangladesh".
Attractions
Hajiganj Fort is a historical fortress in the northeast of the city.
