Panchagarh (District)
Panchagarh ( Bengali : পঞ্চগড়) is a district in the Rangpur Division of Bangladesh . In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Panchagarh . The total area of the district is 1404.62 km². The district consists of 6 Upazilas . The district borders on three sides of a 288 km long border on various Indian districts, which includes the districts Darjeeling in the north, the districts Jalpaiguri and Koch Bihar in the northeast and the districts Uttar Dinajpur and Purnia in the west . To the south and east it is bordered by Dinajpur , Thakurgaon and Nilphamari .
history
Until the partition of India in 1947, the area belonged to Dinajpur, which was split into a Pakistani and an Indian part. It was then part of the Dinajpur district until 1984 when it was finally spun off and raised to a separate district.
Demographics
The district has 987,644 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 51.8% of the population. 83.10% of the total population are Muslim , 16.54% are Hindus , 0.25% are Christians , 0.01% are Buddhists and 0.1% are others.
climate
The climate is tropical and warm all year round. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 30.2 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 10.1 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall is 1955 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.
economy
The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . Rice , jute , tobacco , vegetables and fruits are mainly grown . The production of tea is of increasing importance . In 2008, 68% of the population were farmers. According to the 2011 census, 65.3% of the workforce work in agriculture, 27.3% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 7.5% in industry .
