Sunamganj ( Bengali : সুনামগঞ্জ জেলা , Sunāmagañj jelā ) is an administrative district in northeastern Bangladesh , which is part of the Sylhet Division , the superordinate administrative unit. The district capital is also called Sunamganj .
geography
The 3747.18 km² district borders on the Habiganj district in the north, the Sylhet districts in the east, the Indian state of Tripura in the south and the Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj districts in the west .
The main rivers are the Kushiyara and the Surma , which are actually two arms of the Barak .
climate
The temperatures fluctuate between 8.6 ° C and 32.7 ° Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 3080 mm. The average humidity is over 70%. There is little rain in the months from November to March. June, July and August are the months with the most rain.
history
From 350 the area of today's district was part of the empire of Kamarupa . From 600 it belonged to the Kingdom of Laur , which existed until 1565. From 1565 to 1765 it was part of the Mughal Empire . From 1765 it belonged to British India as part of the Dhaka Division and from 1874 to Assam and the Sylhet district. From 1947 to 1971 the district was part of East Pakistan in the Republic of Pakistan. On March 1, 1984, the previous sub-district Habiganj became an independent district.

Significant places
The most populous place within the district is the district capital Sunamganj . Other cities (Town) are Chhatak , Derai and Jagannathpur . But with Dharmapasha , Doarabazar and Jamalganj there are three other places without city rights with more than 10,000 inhabitants. administration
Although Sunamganj was created in 1874 as an administrative subunit of the Sylhet district, it was not until 1984 that it received the status of an independent national administrative district. Sunamganj is divided into eleven Upazilas : Bishwambarpur, Chhatak, Dakshin Sunamganj, Derai, Dharmapasha, Doarabazar, Jagannathpur, Jamalganj, Shalla, Sunamganj Sadar and Tahirpur. Within this administrative division there are four self-governing towns ( municipalities ), 87 Union Parishads (village councils) and 2887 villages.
