Bagerhat ( Bengali : বাগেরহাট ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh that is part of the Khulna Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Bagerhat . The total area of ​​the district is 3959 km². The district is made up of 9 Upazilas . Bagerhat was declared a district in 1984. In terms of area, the district is now one of the largest districts in Bangladesh.

The district is bordered by Gopalganj and Narail in the north, the Bay of Bengal in the south, Pirojpur and Barguna in the east and Khulna in the west. Several rivers and tributaries flow through the district. The district has 1.4 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 59.0% of the population. 81.3% of the population are Muslim , 18.4% are Hindus and 0.4% are Buddhists.

The climate is warm and humid all year round. The annual average temperature varies from a maximum of 24.2 degrees to at least 12.0 degrees. The annual rainfall is 1947 mm.

The economy of Bagerhat is predominantly agricultural. The fishing plays an important role. According to the 2011 census, 56% of the workforce works in agriculture, 38.5% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 5.4% in industry . The important port of Mongla is located in the district.

The historical mosque town of Bagerhat in the district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
