Faridpur ( Bengali : ফরিদপুর ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh , which is within the Dhaka Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Faridpur .

The district borders the Rajbari , Magura , Narail , Gopolganj , Madaripur and the Padma River . The district has 9 Upazilas , 4 parishes, 36 wards, 100 mahallahs (neighborhoods) , 79 Union Council and 1,899 villages. The district has an area of ​​2072 km² and around 1.9 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 49% of the population.

Faridpur District was founded by the British in 1815. The Faridpur Subdivision was part of the Dacca (Dhaka) Division in the Bengal Presidency established by the British East India Company . Faridpur Municipality was founded in 1869. Historically the city was known as Fatehabad. It was also called the Haveli Mahal Fatehabad.

Faridpur is an important center of the jute and fish trade. The industrial sector includes numerous jute mills, sugar mills and a 50 megawatt thermal power station. In terms of transportation, Faridpur is a major hub for the Bangladesh Railway , whose tracks are connected to the Indian Railway network in West Bengal .
