Meherpur (district)

Meherpur ( Bengali : মেহেরপুর জেলা , Meherapur jelā ) is an administrative district in the southwest of Bangladesh with about 580,000 inhabitants, which is within the Khulna division . The district capital is also called Meherpur .

The 716.08 km² district borders in the west on the Indian state of West Bengal , in the east on the Bangladeshi districts of Kushtia and Chuadanga . The largest rivers are Bhairab , Mathabhaga and Kazli .

Until the partition of India in 1947, the area belonged to the Nadia district .

The Meherpur District is divided into the three Upazilas Gangni, Meherpur Sadar and Mujibnagar.

Meherpur is characterized by agriculture, the most important crops are chilli , jute , sugar cane , tobacco and sweet potatoes .
