Barguna ( Bengali : বরগুনা জেলা , Baragunā jelā ) is an administrative district in southwestern Bangladesh, which is within the Barishal Division . The district has 892,781 inhabitants (2011 census).

The 1831.31 km² district borders in the north on the neighboring districts Jhalokathi , Barishal , Pirojpur and Patuakhali , in the east and south on Patuakhali, in the south also on the Bay of Bengal , and in the west on the districts Pirojpur and Bagerhat .

The main rivers are the Payra , Bishkhali and Baleshwar .

Barguna is divided into six Upazilas : Barguna Sadar, Amtali, Patharghata, Betagi, Bamna and Taltali. Within this administrative division there are 38 Union Parishads (village councils), 560 villages and four 4 cities.

The largest city in the district is Barguna, with a population of almost 30,000 .

history

A police station was built in Barguna during British colonial rule in the 18th century, when the area was part of the larger Barishal district. It has been an independent administrative district in Bangladesh since 1984.

economy

The economy consists mainly of agriculture (over 50% of the population work as farmers). Jute production, which used to be the main activity, has now been replaced by the cultivation of pulses and rice as the main cultivars. As a coastal area, the district naturally also has a fishing industry.
