Buriganga is an 18 km long, up to 8 m deep river on the southern edge of Dhaka in Bangladesh .

In earlier times it probably flowed in the bed of the Padma until the Padma changed its course between about AD 1600 and 2000.

In the 2000s, pollution became apparent in Buriganga. Since there was a connection with local tanneries , some of them were relocated to the Dhaleshwari . Nevertheless, the water of the Buriganga could not be used as drinking water in the 2010s, so that groundwater had to be taken, which resulted in a lowering of the groundwater level by several meters in the Dhaka area.
