The Río Caplina is an approximately 118 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the extreme south of Peru in the Tacna region .

River course

The Río Caplina rises in the Cordillera del Barroso , a mountain range of the Peruvian western cordillera , at an altitude of about 4950  m . The headwaters are located northwest of the Chupiquiña volcano, not far from the Chilean border. From there it initially flows 15 km to the south and then turns another 15 km to the west. The Quebrada Cotañane meets the river when coming from the north. This now flows on the rest of the river in a predominantly south-south-west direction. At river km 62 the Quebrada Palca meets the Río Caplina from the left. This reaches the metropolitan area of the city of Tacna at river kilometer 55 . At river kilometer 43, on the eastern outskirts of Tacna, a tributary fed by the Uchusuma Canal ( ) meets the Río Caplina. This runs along the eastern and southern periphery of the city, before crossing the alluvial surface of La Yarada for another 30 km and finally reaching the Pacific coast at La Yarada Los Palos . The river water is used for irrigation and drinking water supply. Below Tacna, the Río Caplina usually no longer has any water.

Catchment area

The catchment area covers 3062 km². If you add the area in the headwaters of the neighboring river systems of the Río Mauri and the Río Uchusuma, whose water is fed via the Uchusuma Canal ( ), the area is 3425 km². The catchment area of the Río Caplina borders in the west and north on that of the Río Sama , in the northeast on that of the Río Mauri, in the south on that of the Río Lluta and the Quebrada de Escritos .
