Chupiquiña is the name of a 5789 m high volcanic mountain in the north of Chile in the Región de Arica y Parinacota . It is located on the border with Peru in close proximity to the Tacora volcano .
There were sulfur mines in the saddle between Chupiquiña and Tacora .
history
The Chupiquiña fell from Peru to Chile after the Pacific War (1879-1884). It then belonged to the former Chilean province of Tacna. With the agreement between Chile and Peru of 1926 it was returned to Peru. Through a subsequent agreement, the mountain was then ceded to Chile as part of an area swap.
