The University of Texas at Arlington (also called UT Arlington or UTA ) is a state university in Arlington and is located in the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex .

With nearly 25,000 students enrolled, it is the third largest college in the University of Texas System after UT Austin and UT San Antonio and the second largest in the region after the University of North Texas .

history

The university was founded in 1895 as Arlington College . It has been renamed several times over the years and integrated into various systems, including a. in Carlisle Military Academy (1902) , Arlington Training School (1913) , Arlington Military Academy (1916) , North Texas Agricultural College (1923), and Arlington State College (1949) .

On April 23, 1965, it became part of the University of Texas System and assumed its current name in 1967 . From 1972 to 1991 the number of students enrolled rose from 14,028 to over 25,125. In the autumn of 1998, however, the number of students fell to 18,662, while in the autumn of 2008 it was again just under 25,000 students.

The UTA offers around 20 bachelor's degree programs and 23 master’s degree programs. A doctorate is also awarded in 17 faculties.

Sports

The UTA sports teams have called themselves Mavericks since 1971 and have no connection with the Dallas Mavericks team, which was founded in 1980 . Sports represented include baseball , basketball , tennis , golf , track and volleyball .

The university has been a member of the Sun Belt Conference since 2013 .

UTA's basketball and volleyball teams regularly play their games in Texas Hall , which is actually an on-campus theater. It offers 4,200 seats in the lower auditorium and in the stands while the game is played on the stage.

Originally there was also a football team that played their games at Maverick Stadium , but it was disbanded in 1985 due to excessive costs and a lack of visitors. The stadium is now used by the women's soccer team and for golf.
