St. Edward's University is a non-profit organization and a private Catholic university of liberal arts in the tradition of the Congregation of the Holy Cross with approximately 5,000 students. It is based in Austin , Texas and has a network of partner universities around the world.

history

St. Edward's University was founded by the Reverend Edward Sorin CSC, then Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, who also founded the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana . Father Sorin began building the institute on farmland south of Austin in 1877 and named it St. Edward's Academy in honor of its patron saint , Edward the Confessor .

In 1885 the then president, Rev. PJ Franciscus, improved the academy's reputation by creating a charter (constitution) and changing the name to St. Edward's College, recruiting professors and admitting more students. As a result, St. Edward's began to grow and the first school newspaper, and baseball and football teams were formed. Permission to build an administration building soon followed. The architect Nicholas J. Clayton from Galveston (Texas) was assigned the main building ( Main Building to build) the college. The building had four floors and was designed in the Gothic Revival style. It was built from the locally occurring limestone (white limestone).

Main entrance

In 1903 a fire destroyed much of the main building, but it was rebuilt by the autumn of that year. In 1922, the main building was again damaged by a tornado. In 1973 the Main Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places . In 1925, St. Edward's received its university charter. Most of the staff up to this time belonged to the Congregation of the Holy Cross, both priests and lay brothers. It was only in 1966 that women were accepted who had previously been taught at Maryhill College , an associated school. In 1970 Maryhill was integrated into St. Edward's and the university ultimately became co-educational .

In 1971 the university introduced bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration . The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP, 1972) and a professional theater arts curriculum were also introduced. Further offers were an innovative course in New College (1974) and Freshman Studies (1975). In 1984 Patricia Hayes became the second layperson to head St. Edward's University. In 1990 the number of students reached the 3,000 mark for the first time.

In 1999, George E. Martin became the 23rd President of St. Edward's University. Funds reached a level of $ 92.4 million in 2015.
