Jorge Fernando (called "Tuto" ) Quiroga Ramírez (born May 5, 1960 in Cochabamba ) is a right-wing liberal Bolivian politician.

Jorge Quiroga was President of Bolivia from August 7, 2001 to August 6, 2002 . In the presidential election on December 18, 2005 , he stood as a candidate for the bourgeois electoral alliance Poder Democrático y Social ("Democratic and Social Power"), abbreviated: PODEMOS (Spanish: "we can"). Quiroga has been married to the US American Virginia Gillum since 1989 and has four children with her.

After finishing school in Santa Cruz ( 1977 ) studied Quiroga in the US and graduated from Texas A & M University a Bachelor -degree as an industrial engineer , then in 1986 the Master of Business Administration at St. Edward's University in Austin (Texas) . Quiroga initially worked for IBM in the USA and returned to Bolivia in 1988 .

Quiroga joined the center-right ADN ( Acción Democrática Nacionalista = "National Democratic Movement") party of the former military dictator Hugo Banzer . In 1997 , under Banzer, Quiroga became the youngest Vice President in the history of Bolivia at the age of 37. After Hugo Banzer had to resign for health reasons (lung cancer), Quiroga took over the presidency on August 7, 2001 until the regular end of the term of office on August 6, 2002. According to the Bolivian constitution, Quiroga was not allowed to run for re-election as incumbent.

For the early presidential election in 2005 he formally resigned from ADN in order to run as a non-partisan candidate for the electoral alliance PODEMOS . The ADN supported his candidacy and renounced his own presidential candidate.

In the early years of the new President Evo Morales' government , he was considered one of the sharpest opposition critics. However, in 2010 he was charged with defamation and defamation. He accused the leadership of the public banking group Banco Unión SA of corruption, money laundering and mismanagement. In the first instance he was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison. According to the constitution, this means that he can no longer run for public office. Quiroga, however, is abroad and has therefore not started imprisonment. He continues to participate in initiatives to publicize his criticism of the Bolivian and other left-wing governments in Latin America. According to Vice President García Linera , another process is to be initiated in early 2011 . These are contracts with oil companies that Quiroga signed during his tenure as president.
