history

The original handbook goes back to an idea of the historian and president of the TSHA, Walter Prescott Webb (1888-1963), which he developed at the Department of History at the University of Texas . The work appeared in two volumes in 1952, and a supplementary volume was published in 1976.

In 1996, on this basis, a version expanded to six volumes and more than 23,000 articles appeared under the title New Handbook of Texas ( ISBN 0-87611-151-7 ). Editors were L. Tuffly Ellis, James W. Pohl, and Ron Tyler.

Since February 15, 1999, the text of the work has been available online on the Internet in a once again expanded edition under the title Handbook of Texas Online . Necessary corrections and around 400 additional articles could be included, which up to then had not been taken into account for the second print run due to lack of space. Since then, the Internet edition has been continuously expanded; in 2008 it already contained more than 25,000 articles. The Internet edition contains articles on general topics such as the history of the US state of Texas since World War II ( Texas since World War II ), biographies of important citizens of the state of Texas such as the politician and General Samuel Houston and the surveyor WD Twichell (1864 –1959), on farms such as the Matador Ranch, and on geographical objects such as the city of Waco .

Many Texas scholars and professors, such as Robert A. Calvert , co-author of The History of Texas , have contributed to the Handbook .
