Walter Prescott Webb

Walter Prescott Webb (born April 3, 1888 in Panola County , Texas , † March 8, 1963 ) was an American historian.

Live and act

Webb was the son of the farmer Casner P. Webb (1862-1940) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Kyle (1855-1949) and was born on their parents' farm near Carthage , Texas. He attended Ranger High School in Ranger ( Eastland County ) and then studied at the University of Texas in Austin .

Webb graduated with a BA in 1915 and then worked in San Marcos as an accountant and in San Antonio as an assistant to an optician. In 1918 he returned to the University of Texas and got a position in the Faculty of History. He was later with his work on the two years of Texas Rangers doctorate .

1920/21 he spent doing research at the University of Chicago and then returned to Austin. There he began to write on his work "The Great Plains", which he was able to publish in 1931 with great success. Long member of the Texas Historical Association , Webb was appointed president in 1939 and this office he held until 1946.

In 1958 the American Historical Association elected Webb its president, and he held that office for a year.

Walter Prescott Webb died in a car accident near Austin, where he was buried in the Texas State Cemetery .
