Ranger is a city in Eastland County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located north of the geographic center of Texas on Interstate 20 between Abilene and Fort Worth and has a total area of 18.5 km², of which 0.4 km² is water.
history
The city was named after the Texas Rangers , who had a camp in a valley on Palo Pinto Creek northeast of Ranger around 1870 .
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 2,584 people in 989 households and 616 families lived here. The population density was 142.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was made up of 84.83% White, 6.73% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 5.65% other ethnic groups. About 1.70% were mixed race and 13.51% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 989 households, 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.7% of these were married couples living together. 14.7% were single mothers and 37.7% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were single households and there were people living in 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
