Carthage is the district capital and seat of the county seat of Panola County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located near the center of the county, in east Texas, is about 30 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 27.3 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.
history
The name Panola is the Indian word for cotton. The city was named after the place of origin of Judge John Allison , a cotton buyer from Panola County , Mississippi , who played a leading role in the formation of the new county. In the period that followed, cotton production became the county's largest economic factor.

According to the 2000 census, 6,664 people in 2,598 households and 1,771 families lived here. The population density was 244.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 74.65% White, 21.02% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 1.98% other ethnic groups. About 1.29% were of mixed race and 4.35% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,598 households, 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9% of these were married couples living together. 15.4% were single mothers and 31.8% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.00.
25.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.9% 18 to 24, 24.7% 25 to 44, 20.9% 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 80.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 74.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,822 USD , and the median income for a family 37,031 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,080 versus $ 21,473 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,332. 13.2% of the population and 11.8% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 15.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.9% were 65 or older.
