John Andrew Young

John Andrew Young (born November 10, 1916 in Corpus Christi , Texas , †  January 22, 2002 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1979 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Young attended Incarnate Word Academy and Corpus Christi College Academy . He then studied until 1937 at St. Edward's University in Austin . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Texas and his admission to the bar in 1940, he began to work in this profession. During World War II , he served in the US Navy between 1941 and 1945 . Between 1946 and 1952 he worked in various positions as a public prosecutor. From 1953 to 1956 he served as a district judge in Nueces County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1956 congressional election , Young was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded John J. Bell on January 3, 1957 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1979 . During this time the Vietnam War , the height of the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair fell . On November 22, 1963, Young was in the car parade to accompany President John F. Kennedy when he was murdered in Dallas . In 1977 he hit the headlines because of a sex scandal. In this context, his wife, with whom he had five children, committed suicide. This affair also cost him the re-nomination of his party for re-election to Congress in 1978.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Young worked as a lobbyist and advisor. He died on January 22, 2002 in Arlington and was buried in the local national cemetery.
