Fontaine Maury Maverick (born October 23, 1895 in San Antonio , Texas , † June 7, 1954 ) was an American politician .

After Maverick attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington , he returned to Texas and studied law at the University of Texas at Austin . He was admitted to the bar in 1916 and practiced in San Antonio. During the First World War he served in the United States Army and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart . After the war, Maverick was a businessman.

Maverick was elected as a Democrat in Congress and represented there from January 3, 1935 to January 3, 1939 the state of Texas in the House of Representatives of the United States . After leaving the House of Representatives, Maverick had previously not been nominated for a candidacy in 1938, he became mayor of his native city and held this office from 1939 to 1941.

Maverick was the author of A Maverick American (1937) and In Blood and Ink: The Life and Documents of American Democracy (1939). He also wrote various articles. He died on June 7, 1954 in San Antonio and was buried there in the San Jose Burial Park .

Maury Maverick was a grandson of Samuel A. Maverick . Since May 22nd, he was married to Terrell Louise Dobbs. The couple had two children. One of them, his son Maury Maverick Jr. later also became a politician. He was also a nephew of Congressman James Luther Slayden (1853-1924)
