Alexander N. "Al" Green (born September 1, 1947 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since 2005 he has represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Al Green studied at Texas A&M University between 1966 and 1971 . He then continued his education at Tuskegee University in Alabama . After completing a law degree at Texas Southern University in Houston and his admission to the bar in 1974, he began to work in this profession. Between 1977 and 2004 he was a Justice of the Peace in Harris County . He also became president of the Houston branch of the NAACP .

In the 2004 election , Green was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth congressional electoral district of Texas , where he succeeded Nick Lampson on January 3, 2005 . He was re-elected in all subsequent elections; his mandate currently runs until January 3, 2021. He is or was a member of the Finance Committee and two of its sub-committees. He is also a member of 13 Congressional Caucuses .

On May 17, 2017, he became the first member of Congress to call for impeachment proceedings against President Trump. The vote on impeachment, which he initiated because of Trump's reactions to Charlotteville , among other things, failed on December 6, 2017 with 58 to 364 votes in the House of Representatives.
