Charles Stewart

Charles Stewart (born May 30, 1836 in Memphis , Tennessee , †  September 21, 1895 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1893 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1845, Charles Stewart moved with his parents to Galveston , Texas, where he attended public schools. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1854, he began to work in this profession in Marlin . Between 1856 and 1860 he served as a public prosecutor in the 13th judicial district of his state. Politically, Stewart joined the Democratic Party . In 1861 he was a delegate to the meeting at which the state of Texas decided to leave the Union. During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . In 1866 he moved to Houston , where he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1874 to 1876 he was a legal advisor to that city.

Stewart was a member of the Texas Senate between 1878 and 1882 . In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Texas , where he succeeded John Henninger Reagan on March 4, 1883 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1893 . In 1892 he renounced another candidacy. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Stewart returned to working as a lawyer in Houston. He died in San Antonio on September 21, 1895 and was buried in Houston.
