William Harrison Martin
William Harrison Martin (born May 23, 1823 in Eufaula , Alabama , † February 3, 1898 in Hillsboro , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Martin attended public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent law degree in Troy and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In 1850 he moved to Texas, where he continued to practice as a lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1853 and 1857 he was a member of the Texas Senate . At the beginning of the civil war he set up a company for the Confederation Army . He then served in this army directly under the command of Robert E. Lee . Until 1865 he participated in all battles fought by Lee. He was also present at the latter's surrender at Appomattox Court House .
After the war, Martin worked as a lawyer in Athens . In 1872 he became a district attorney. Following the resignation of MP John Henninger Reagan , who had been elected to the US Senate , Martin was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the due by-election for the second seat of Texas , where he was appointed on April 4. November 1887 took up his new mandate. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1891 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Martin practiced again as a lawyer in Athens. He died on February 3, 1898 on his estate near Hillsboro, where he was also buried.
