Kent Ronald Hance (born November 14, 1942 in Dimmitt , Castro County , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1985 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Kent Hance attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Texas Tech University until 1965 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Texas and his admission to the bar in 1968, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1978 he was a member of the Texas Senate . In the congressional elections of 1978 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th  constituency of his state , where he prevailed against the future US President George W. Bush . On January 3, 1979, Hance then succeeded George H. Mahon . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1985 . There he was considered very conservative.

In 1984 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . In 1985 Kent Hance changed his party affiliation and became a member of the Republicans . In 1986 and 1990 he unsuccessfully sought to nominate his new party for gubernatorial elections . Between 1987 and 1990 he served as the Texas State Railroad Commissioner. From 2006 to 2014 he was Chancellor ( Chancellor ) of the Texas Tech University System .
