Robert E. Burke

Robert Emmett Burke (born August 1, 1847 in Dadeville , Alabama , †  June 5, 1901 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1901 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Burke attended public schools in his home country. At the age of 16, he was in 1863 during the Civil War soldier in the army of the Confederacy . He served in a cavalry unit from Georgia . In 1866 he moved to Jefferson , Texas. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession in Dallas. From 1878 to 1888 he was a judge in Dallas County . He then held this office until 1896 in the 14th judicial district of Texas.

Burke also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1896 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Joseph Abbott on March 4, 1897 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 5, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . After a special election, Burke's mandate fell to Dudley G. Wooten .
