Hans-Christian Free Life

Hans-Christian Freiesleben (born August 14, 1903 in Leipzig , † November 14, 1985 in Stuttgart ) was a German geophysicist , navigator and astronomer . He was considered an expert on scientific problems of navigation and the history of navigation.

Life

Free life was a grandson of the Senate President at the Reichsgericht Georg Freiesleben . His parents were the later Senate President at the Reichsgericht Hans Freiesleben (1871–1945) and his wife Thekla Emilia Helene nee. Berger . From 1913 he attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in his hometown, which he left in 1922 with the school leaving certificate. He first studied at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg with Max Wolf and from the summer semester 1923 to 1926 at the University of Leipzig astronomy , mathematics , physics and philosophy . It existed in Leipzig in 1926State examination for higher teaching qualifications and received his doctorate in the same year . From January to March 1927 he was an extraordinary assistant at the university observatory in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1928, as a scholarship holder of the Notgemeinschaft der deutschen Wissenschaft, he took part in an expedition to La Paz from the Potsdam and Bonn observatories . After working as a research assistant at the Bergedorf observatory , he began researching nautical astronomy and navigation methods at the German Sea Observatory in 1930 . From 1936 he was head of the nautical astronomy department . In June 1939 he was appointed head of the navigation methods and astronomy department within the nautical department to work with the naval high command . From 1945 until he retired in 1968, Freileben was head of the navigation department at the German Hydrographic Institute . He was also the editor of the nautical yearbook and editor of the nautical magazine Der Seewart . As an expert in nautical navigation, he was a member of national and international committees. He was an honorary member of the Royal Institute of Navigation , the American Institute of Navigation and the German Society for Positioning and Navigation .

After his retirement, he was active as a consultant to German business and chairman of the scientific advisory board of the German Society for Positioning and Navigation. His social and voluntary commitment was remarkable. In Hamburg, for example, Freieleben was a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Church and a board member of the St. Gertrud Community Care Foundation . In this role he played a key role in the construction of an old people's home.
