Michael Clifton Burgess (* 23. December 1950 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since 2003 he has represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Michael Burgess attended North Texas State University in Denton until 1976 . After a subsequent medical degree and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 2002 congressional elections , Burgess was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 26th constituency of Texas , where he succeeded the non-running majority leader Dick Armey on January 3, 2003 . Against his son Scott Burgess had prevailed in the Republican primary . Since he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative period runs until January 3, 2021. He is or was a member of the Committee on Energy and Trade and three sub-committees. He also belongs to the tea party movement related Tea Party Caucus on. During his time as a congressman, the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Burgess essentially represents the interests of his party. In connection with the increase in the debt ceiling in August 2011, he spoke out in favor of impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama .

On June 17, 2013, Burgess attracted attention by claiming male fetuses were masturbating. Accordingly, they are able to feel pain and pleasure and should therefore not be aborted. Burgess is married and lives privately in Lewisville .
