Dan Crenshaw (2019)

Daniel Reed Crenshaw (born March 14, 1984 in Aberdeen , Scotland ) is an American Republican politician . The former soldier has represented the 2nd Congressional Constituency of Texas in the United States House of Representatives since 2019 .

Family, education and work

Dan Crenshaw is the son of a manager in the oil industry ; his mother died of cancer when he was ten years old. The family lived abroad frequently during his childhood, including Ecuador and Colombia , which is why Crenshaw is fluent in Spanish . He graduated from Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in international relations in 2006 and received a master's degree in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School in 2017 .

Crenshaw served the Navy SEALs in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2006 . After two missions in Iraq, he lost his right eye in the Afghan province of Helmand in June 2012 and almost went blind when a land mine exploded directly in front of him, killing his translator. He has been wearing an eye patch ever since . He then was in command of two intelligence operations in Bahrain and South Korea . In 2016 he was discharged from service as Lieutenant Commander on medical grounds. For his commitment he received two Bronze Star Medals , the Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation Medal . He briefly worked on military legislation for Congressman Pete Sessions .

He has been married to Tara Crenshaw since 2013. In 2017, he returned to Houston for the first time since childhood to help clean up Hurricane Harvey .

Political career

Crenshaw ran in 2018 for the 2nd Congressional constituency of Texas, which spans the outskirts of the metropolis of Houston to the north in a semicircle. The previous Republican MP Ted Poe did not run for re-election. In the Republican primary on March 6, the previously unknown and poorly resourced Crenshaw received the second-most votes out of nine candidates with 27.4 percent and thus entered the second ballot, in which he was 69 on May 22, 2018 .8 percent was chosen as the Republican candidate. At the beginning of his campaign, Crenshaw was still well behind the experienced and networked MP Kevin Roberts. Crenshaw had made a name for himself in particular with the Latinos in his constituency and was supported by the Super PAC American Patriots with $ 500,000.

In the main election in November 2018 , he beat Democrat Todd Litton with 52.9 to 45.5 percent. Crenshaw had been seen as the clear favorite. In the vote on November 14, 2018, he spoke out at the parliamentary group chairmanship for Kevin McCarthy , the moderate favorite of the party leadership, against the tea party candidate Jim Jordan .

Crenshaw moved to Congress on January 3, 2019, as the youngest Texas MP .

Positions and Style

Crenshaw's positions are broadly in line with the conservative mainstream; He advocates higher defense spending and, at the same time, a reduction in national debt. He wrote his 2018 program entirely himself and has in-depth knowledge of political content, particularly in foreign and security policy. On immigration issues, Crenshaw supports President Donald Trump's restrictive line and his project of a border wall with Mexico , but criticized him for his polarizing language in the presidential election campaign . He had described Trump's attacks on Muslims in 2015 as “hateful” and “insane rhetoric”. In July 2018, in an article for the National Review , he called for a restart of relations with Mexico and called on top politicians to rhetorically disarm. Mexico is a partner, not an opponent, when it comes to border security. President Trump has shielded the Republicans well against the left , but in the long term the party needs a return to Ronald Reagan's optimism .

The Houston Chronicle described Crenshaw in 2018 as charismatic and his style as spiritual and authentic. He tries to address younger voters by making clear, fact-based and rational arguments; he wants to make conservatism "cool and exciting" again. Even before his election to the House of Representatives, Crenshaw appeared regularly on the conservative Fox News Channel . He received a lot of media attention when Pete Davidson said on Saturday Night Live three days before Election Day 2018 that Crenshaw looked like a hit man in a porno film, which aroused harsh criticism, especially from veterans associations. Crenshaw appeared on the next broadcast unannounced, accepted Davidson's apology and called for the political rifts in the country to be bridged; he pointed out that Davidson lost his father as a firefighter on September 11, 2001. Crenshaw was then listed by the Washington Post as the upcoming star of the Republicans, after they had lost many long-standing mandates and gained few in 2018, and was referred to as a reconciling politician.

In 2020, Tim Miller detailed that Crenshaw was attacking the media for what he believed to be unjustified dealings with Donald Trump, as this was helpful to his career.
