Lloyd Doggett (born October 6, 1946 in Austin , Texas ) is an American lawyer and politician of the Democratic Party . He has represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives since 1995 .

Life

Doggett graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a law degree . During his studies he was elected president of the student council in 1967; he also edited the Texas Law Review at the end of his studies . He graduated with honors in 1970. At age 26, Doggett was elected to the Texas Senate, to which he served for eleven years. He was involved in the drafting of 124 Texas statutes during that time.

In 1988 he was elected a judge on the Supreme Court of Texas . He gave votes in which he the right to proceedings before juries supported, equality in school fees and free access to information. The Mexican-American Bar of Texas called him an "extraordinary judge from Texas," he was honored with the James Madison Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and received the first Amendment Award from the National Society of Professional Journalists .

In 1994, Lloyd Doggett was elected to the US House of Representatives in the tenth constituency of Texas. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2021. In 2005 he moved to the 25th district of his state. Since 2013 he has represented the 35th electoral district of his state there. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . He is or was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and three of its sub-committees. He is also a member of several Congressional Caucuses .
