Joseph Weldon Bailey Jr.

Joseph Weldon Bailey Jr. (born December 15, 1892 in Gainesville , Texas , †  July 17, 1943 there ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Bailey was the son of Joseph Weldon Bailey Sr. (1862-1929), who represented the State of Texas in both houses of Congress . He attended public schools in his home country and in Washington, DC He then studied at Princeton University until 1915 and then at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville until 1919 . This time was interrupted by his military service during the First World War. He achieved the rank of first lieutenant in the US Army . After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1932 congressional election , Bailey was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the then newly established 19th  constituency of Texas, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1933. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1934, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1935 . During his time in Congress, the first of the Federal Government's New Deal laws were passed there under President Franklin D. Roosevelt , which Bailey was somewhat reserved about. Although he was a member of the Democratic Party, he disagreed on many points with the President's New Deal policy.

In 1934, Bailey unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . After the American entry into World War II , he became a captain in the United States Marine Corps . He died on July 17, 1943 at Camp Howze in Gainesville of the consequences of a car accident.
