James Marvin Leath (born May 6, 1931 in Henderson , Texas , †  December 8, 2000 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1991 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Marvin Leath attended his homeland public schools including Henderson High School , which he graduated in 1949. He then went to Kilgore Junior College before studying at the University of Texas at Austin until 1954 . From 1954 to 1956 he served in the US Army . He was then a football coach at Henderson High School until 1959 . He then worked in trade. Leath worked in the banking industry since 1962. He became a director at various banks and at two craft businesses. From 1972 to 1974 he was on the staff of Congressman William R. Poage .

Politically, Leath joined the Democratic Party . In the 1978 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eleventh constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Poages on January 3, 1979. After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1991 . In 1990 he declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Leath no longer appeared politically. He died on December 8, 2000 in Arlington.
