On August 5, 1860, the city was struck by a severe fire and 43 buildings were destroyed. In 1878 the courthouse was also destroyed by fire, and the brick building was rebuilt in the same place. In the following years other buildings were built in this way.

In the early 1930s, oil was first discovered about ten kilometers northwest of Henderson. As a result, the entire regional economy experienced an upswing, the population rose within a few months from 2000 to over 10,000. To this day, the oil fields ensure prosperity in the region.
