Tatum is a city in eastern Texas ( USA ) with a population of around 1383 (2014 estimate).
The place is named after Albert and Mary C. Tatum , who settled in the area in the 1840s and built a plantation with a large mansion in 1848. The village developed from 1885 when the Santa Fe railway line came into the area. In 1886 a post office was set up, about 10 years later a school was opened 10 km northwest of Tatum with the Old Miller School . In 1903 the place got a bank and in 1904 it had 125 inhabitants. In the same year Tatum was destroyed by a tornado and the following year the northern part of the town was devastated by a fire. However, Tatum recovered and grew to 428 residents by 1925. The population peaked in 1988 with 1,531 inhabitants, at the last official census in 2010 the population was 1,175.
