Overton is a city in Rusk County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in northeast Texas, about 90 km to the east from Louisiana and has a total area of ​​17.5 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.

Nearby cities include New London (immediately adjacent to the east), Arp (4 km southwest), Kilgore (8 km northeast), Troup (13 km southwest) and Henderson (13 km southeast).

history

The town was named after Frank Overton , an early settler in the area who provided a lot of land to found the town. It has officially existed since 1873, when it was founded at the intersection of two railway lines. The first post office was opened in the same year. The city experienced growth when nearby towns were opened up by the railway line and the city's founder offered foreigners free land, which many also accepted.

The first Baptist Church was built in 1875, followed by a school in 1876. A local newspaper article in 1888 stated that the city had 15 shops and two hotels, among other things, and had a population of over 500. The city was an agricultural center until oil was first discovered around 1930. As a result, Overton experienced a prosperity boom, more churches and schools and a bank were built. Within a few years the population rose to over 4,500. In the 1940s, however, it fell rapidly and by the early 1950s was only 2,000. At that time there were over 150 shops and businesses in the city.

Texas State Highway 135 crosses the city from the southwest to the northeast . Texas State Highway 64 runs about five kilometers southwest, and US Highway 259 also runs six kilometers east . About 15 kilometers north of the city there is a connection to Interstate 20 , which runs through six states from western Texas to South Carolina on the east coast.

According to the 2000 census, 2350 people lived here in 906 households and 629 families. The population density was 135.2 inhabitants per km ². Ethnically, the population was made up of 100% white people.

Of the 906 households, 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.2% of these were married couples living together. 12.1% were single mothers and 30.5% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

25.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4% 18 to 24, 24.6% 25 to 44, 22.0% 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 87.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.3 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,098 USD , and the median income for a family 34,662 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,329 versus $ 17,255 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,256. 17.5% of the population and 14.1% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.8% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.4% were 65 or older.
